Leaping the River I. During a storm, a car traveling on a level horizontal road comes upon a bridge that has washed out. The driver must get to the other side, so he decides to try leaping the river with his car. The side of the road the car is on is 21.3 m above the river, while the opposite side is only 1.8 m above the river. The river itself is a raging torrent 48.0 m wide. (a) How fast should the car be traveling at the time it leaves the road in order just to clear the river and land safely on the opposite side? (b) What is the speed of the car just before it lands on the other side?

- Before jumping from the bridge, Martin throws his water bottle to a friend standing on the bank of the lake. The bridge is 7.0 m high. The friend is standing on the bank 15.0 m from the base of the bridge with their hand 1.0m above the ground. What speed must Martin throw the bottle horizontally for it to reach his friend's hand?arrow_forwardOn the roof of a 24 meter high building there is a cannon. The barrel of the cannon is 4.0 meters long and forms the angle ? = 30° up from the horizontal. When the cannon is fired, the cannon ball leaves the muzzle the cannon barrel with the initial speed of 360 km/h regardless of the angle of the barrel. Suppose you find yourself in one area which, with the exception of the building you are standing on, is completely flat. How long does it take for the bullet to hit the ground?arrow_forwardYou are the captain of the John Paul Jones, Class-A Battleship on your way to kill the alien ship on the North side of Oahu, Hawaii. Your ship travels 10.36km [W650S] and then 5.60 km [S450W] to meet up with the alien ship. Determine your ship’s total displacement.arrow_forward
- To celebrate her good performance on a physics test, Alice decides to break out a bottle of champagne. In order to avoid property damage, she takes the bottle outside to uncork it. The cork pops off the champagne bottle with a velocity of 12.0 m/s at an angle of 15° relative to the vertical. When the cork is released, Alice is holding the bottle such that the cork is 1.80 m above the ground. How far does Alice have to walk to retrieve the cork?arrow_forwardA car comes to a bridge during a storm and finds the bridge washed out. The driver must get to the other side, so he decides to try leaping it with his car. The side the car is on is 22.3m above the river, whereas the opposite side is a mere 2.4m above the river. The river itself is a raging torrent 67.0m wide. 1) How fast should the car be traveling just as it leaves the cliff in order to just clear the river and land safely on the opposite side? 2)What is the speed of the car just before it lands safely on the other side?arrow_forwardAlaskan rescue plane drops a package of emergency rations to stranded hikers. The plane is traveling horizontally at 40.0 m/s at a height of 100 m above the ground. Neglect air resistance. (a) Where does the package strike the ground relative to the point at which it was released? (b) What are the horizontal and vertical components of the velocity of the package just before it hits the ground? (c) What is the angle of the impact?arrow_forward
- An Olympic diver is on a diving platform 4.5 m above the water. To start her dive, she runs off of the platform with a speed of 1.3 m/s in the horizontal direction. You will be asked to find the diver's speed just before she enters the water. What are the x- and y components of her velocity just before she enters the water? Note: these may require calculations.vfx = 1.3 m/s; vfy = -4.5 m/svfx = 1.3 m/s; vfy = -9.4 m/svfx = 0 m/s; vfy = 0 m/svfx = 4.5 m/s; vfy = -4.5 m/sarrow_forwardA Chinook (King) salmon (Genus Oncorynchus) can jump out of water with a speed of 5.89 m/s. (See Problem 4.9, page 111 for an investigation of how the fish can leave the water at a higher speed that it can swim underwater.) If the salmon is in a stream with water speed equal to 1.55 m/s, how high in the air can the fish jump if it leaves the water traveling vertically upwards relative to the Earth? Need Help? The largest of these could throw a 300 kg stone a distance x = 2 km. Assume that the stone was launched at an angle of 0 = 45 degrees above the horizontal; in the absence of air resistance, this gives the largest range. a) What speed did the stone have to be launched at to achieve this range? b) How long was the ball in the air? c) How fast was the ball traveling at the apex of its flight?arrow_forward
- A friend of yours has a one story house with a pool in the backyard. Someone gets the bright idea to jump from the roof of the house into the deep end of the pool. a) If the roof of the house is 16 ft tall and the horizontal distance between the edge of the house and the pool is 10 ft, what would the jumper's minimum velocity need to be to land in the pool? b) Let's assume your friend can jump with an initial horizontal velocity of 15 ft/s. What is their total velocity when they hit the water? Suppose Colossus throws Wolverine at an angle of 0 34.9° with respect to the ground (see figure below). Wolverine is d = 2.26 m above the ground when he is released, and he leaves Colossus's hands with a speed of v¡ = 19.3 m/s. = (a) Using conservation of energy and the components of the initial velocity, find the maximum height attained by Wolverine during the flight. m (b) Using conservation of energy, what is Wolverine's speed the instant before he hits the ground? m/sarrow_forwardA Canon launches a target at 40°. My distance of the x value is 4.60m. My distance for the y value is 1.1670 meters. The distance total is 4.746 meters. The problem is asking me to figure out the time of the object in air.I don't have velocity, I know the velocity initial is more than 0 and that the velocity final is zero. If I want to find time, I would need to use a vector diagram of velocity and use the resultant as my velocity. However, I have no idea what the velocity of Y or velocity of X. I only know that the velocity of X is in equilibrium and is constant as well as knowing that velocity final is zero. Oh yeah also velocity initial is velocity of the x value.arrow_forward
