Chapter 3, Problem 18P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The subatomic particle that makes up cathode rays should be described.

Concept introduction:

Cathode rays or electron beams are a flow of electrons found in the vacuum tubes. They were first discovered by W. Hittorf in 1896 and they were named as cathode rays by E. Goldstein. If the evacuated glass tube is fitted with 2 electrodes and a voltage is applied, the glass behind positively charged electrode is observed to emit light, owing to the electrons emitted from and traveling away from the cathode. They travel in a straight line and produce shadow when obstructed by any object.
