Concept explainers
To Explain: Atomic spectra might be considered the “fingerprints” of atoms.
Answer to Problem 24A
Every single atom gives off its own characteristic line spectrum.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: After atoms get excited, they emit light of particular wavelengths. These wavelengths correspond to various colors. Also, emitted light can be recognized as a series of colored lines (by dark places in between). Therefore, this series of colored lines is known as atomic spectra or line.
Every element has a unique atomic spectrum. So, elements can be recognized by spectra just as people can be recognized by fingerprints. In other words, atomic spectra are unique as each atom is already at a different energy level.
Conclusion: Every element shows a unique set of atomic spectra.
