Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The process of contraction of muscles is to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
The full form of ATP is adenosine triphosphate which contains three phosphate groups. The energy in human beings is stored as ATP.
ATP is synthesized in mitochondria (called power house of the cell) by oxidative phosphorylation. It acts as a source of energy to carry out the biological process.
The hydrolysis of ATP results in the formation of the chemical energy. This energy is further converted into other forms of energy.
The muscles are responsible for the body movements. The myosin and actin are the repeating units of the skeletal muscle. These filaments are responsible for the contraction of the muscles.
(b)
Interpretation:
The source of energy used in muscle contraction is to be stated.

- Classify the following compounds as endergonic or exergonic : (a) glucose,(b) methylamine, (c) octane, (d) ethanol.arrow_forwardHow much CO2 can be derived from 500 g lactose?arrow_forwardList, by name, the four general stages of the process by which biochemical energy is obtained from food.arrow_forward
- Outline the three stages in the extraction of energy from food. What type of chemical reaction occurs most often during digestion?arrow_forwardWhich nutrient provides energy in its most concentrated form?arrow_forwardCan a chemical that, in essence, goes through the body unchanged be an essential nutrient? Explain.arrow_forward
- Sophie and Isabella are considering eating a diet that is 10% fat by weight. What percentage of their total calories would be fat? 31% 20% 75% 25% 10%arrow_forwardThe oxidation of 1 mol of glucose supplies enough meta-bolic energy to form 36 mol of ATP. Oxidation of 1 mol of a typ-ical dietary fat like tristearin (C₅₇H₁₁₆O₆) yields enough energyto form 458 mol of ATP. (a) How many molecules of ATP canform per gram of glucose? (b) Per gram of tristearin?arrow_forwardYou decide to go on a diet to lose 5 lbs (1 lb = 454 g). Fatty tissue consists of about 85% fat and 15% water. How many Calories (kcal) must be eliminated from your regular intake to lose that weight? Fat contains 9.0 kcal/g.arrow_forward
- . Each gram of mammalian skeletal muscle consumes ATP at a rate of about 1x 10-3 mol/min during contraction. Concentrations of ATP and creatine phosphate in muscle are about 4 mM and 25 mM, respectively, and the density of muscle tissue can be taken to be about 1.2 g/cm'. (a) How long could contraction continue using ATP alone? (b) If all creatine phosphate were converted into ATP and utilized as well, how long could contraction continue? (c) What do these answers tell you?arrow_forwardA certain fruit has a metabolizable energy of 0.4 kcal/g normally and 2.4 kcal/g after it has b een dried. Assume the fresh fruit consists of only water, sugar, and nonmetab olizable matter and find themass fraction of each in the fruit and in the fruit after it is dried, given that sugar has an energy content of 4 kcal/g.arrow_forwardDescribeenergy consumed vs released in reactions. Differentiate between endergonic vs exergonic reactions, anabolism vs catabolism, and coupled reactions.arrow_forward
