Besides having some seed protection, fruits also help to spread seeds. Dispersal of seeds far from parent plant enhances offspring's success rate. If a lot of plants grow in one place, there is competition for nutrients from light, water and soil. Seeds that sprout alongside parent plants and other offspring fight for certain resources.
