Introduction:

Arthropods have complex organ systems that enable them to live in a variety of habitats. Arthropods are segmented invertebrates with bilateral symmetry, coelomatous body cavities and protostome development. Arthropods have exoskeletons with jointed appendages that allow them to move in complex ways.

Answer to Problem 3A

Head is to thorax as cephalothorax is to abdomen.

Explanation of Solution

The thorax is the middle body area, comprising of three fused main segments to which the legs and wings are attached in many arthropods. The abdomen also includes fused segments and is at the posterior end of the arthropod, carries additional legs and includes digestive systems and reproductive organs. For certain arthropods, like crayfish, the thorax area incorporated the head into a frame known as a cephalothorax.
