Concept explainers
To fill:
The name of the organ that excrete wastes in arthropods.
Introduction:
Arthropods have complex organ systems that allow them to live in a variety of habitats. Adaptations to several organ systems, like the respiratory system and the nervous system, have contributed to the development of these animals.
Answer to Problem 1A
Spiracles are to breathing as malpighian tubules are to excreting wastes.
Explanation of Solution
In most arthropods, cellular wastes are removed from the blood through mulpighian tubules. Such tubules also help terrestrial arthropods retain water in their bodies in order to maintain a homeostatic water balance. Tubules are found in the abdomen in insects. Malpighian tubules are bound to an empty intestine containing the undigested food waste to be eliminated from the body.
Spiracles are to breathing as malpighian tubules are to excreting wastes.
