Chapter 26, Problem 14MC
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Nitrification is the process in which ammonium is converted into nitrate by the action of microbes. First ammonium (NH4+) is oxidized to nitrite (NO2-) which is then oxidized again to form nitrate (NO3-). “Autotrophic bacteria” such as Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, are responsible for this conversion. These bacteria are mostly found in soil.
