The composition of gastric juice.
Introduction:
The gastric gland secretes 2 to 3 liters of gastric juices every day that is composed mainly of hydrochloric acid (HCl), water, and pepsin. High concentrations of hydrochloric acid are present in gastric juice, and the pH is 0.8. HCl activates the enzyme lingual lipase and pepsin; it aids in food liquefaction and forms chyme. Parietal cells are seen in the upper region of the gland; it secretes intrinsic factors and hydrochloric acid.
