Monosaccharides are classified in to aldoses and ketoses. The ending –ose indicate a carbohydrate and the prefixes aldo- and keto- indicate whether an aldehyde or keto group is present in the molecule. The number of carbons in the monosaccharide is indicated by the appropriate prefixes tri-, tetra-, penta-, hexa- and so forth.

To classify:
