Introduction:
Varicella-zoster virus is known to cause two diseases- chickenpox (varicella) and shingles (zoster). Upon first encounter with the virus, the person contracts chickenpox. After causing this infection, the virus may become latent in the ganglia of nerves and become asymptomatic. Several years later, it may show up in the form of shingles.
