Chapter 24, Problem 9TYK
Summary Introduction
Introduction: The immune system of the human body can be classified as innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Innate or the body’s first defense mechanism is present since birth. It is non-specific, that is, it acts as a barrier in for every foreign body irrespective of its structure. Adaptive immunity comes in later stages when the body is introduced to pathogens. It is a specific type of defense mechanism. The antibodies are “Y”-shaped structures. The antibodies consist of four polypeptide chains that include two identical heavy and two identical light chains. Two heavy chains are linked by a disulfide bridge. Each heavy chain is linked with one light chain by a disulfide bridge.
