Chapter 24, Problem 8RQ
Summary Introduction
To enlist:
The invertebrates that cause harm to humans and for each animal listed name its taxonomic group.
Introduction:
Nine phyla in kingdom Animalia include several species. Some of them are beneficial to humans, while some are not. The beneficial invertebrates include some species of insects that pollinate flowers, are a source of food for humans, and many more.

Create a concept map or an
illustration drawing for each
phylum (annelida,
Platyhelminthes, nemotod,
echinoderms, chordata) that will
help you classify invertebrate
animals into that group
Make a bracketed or indented dichotomous key for identifying and classifying the 9 major Invertebrate Phyla:
Porifera
Cnidaria
Ctenophora
Platyhelminthes
Nematoda
Mollusca
Annelida
Arthropoda
Echinodermata
Rules to follow in constructing a dichotomous key:
Only use observable characteristics
Start with major characteristics, placing organisms into two groups at each stage
Use a single characteristic at a time
Use contrasting characteristics at each stage i.e. 1(a) short, 1(b) tall
Avoid using the same characteristics
Your colleague is studying a newly discovered organism. She is becoming increasingly convinced that the organism is an arthropod. You find that you must respectfully disagree when you note that the organism has a set of distinctly non-arthropod characteristics. The features that cause you to exclude the organism from the arthropod grouping are
antennae, six legs, and mandibles.
pseudocoel, closed circulatory system, and ventral heart.
Malpighian tubules, ommatidia, and tagmata.
jointed legs, ecdysis, and an exoskeleton.
compound eyes, book lungs, and a hemocoel.
