Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The four β-hydroxy aldehydes that are formed by a crossed aldol reaction of CH3CH2CH2CHO and C6H5CH2CHO are to be predicted.

Concept introduction: Four products are formed when two different aldehydes combine in an aldol reaction and both have alpha hydrogen atoms. An acidic hydrogen atom can be lost from both the aldehydes which results in the formation of an enolate ion in the presence of a base. This type of reaction is known as cross aldol condensation reaction. Both enolates react with both carbonyl compounds to form four products.
