Interpretation:
To depict the counterclockwise movement of electrons in the given Diels-Alder reaction.
Concept introduction:
This is a Diels-Alder reaction which goes by concerted mechanism. Six electrons flow here in cyclic fashion in clock or counterclock wise direction. This is also called cycloaddition reaction because the cyclic movement of electrons leads to joining of two separate species and results in the formation of the ring.
Answer to Problem 24.1P
Explanation of Solution
Diene here is ethene and dienophlile is but-1, 3-diene. These undergo [4+2] cycloaddition reaction. The movement of six electrons in cyclic fashion, in counterclock wise direction gives the final product via six member cyclic transition state. It would be equally correct if the curved arrows were drawn to depict a clockwise movement of those electrons.
Clockwise and counterclockwise movement of electrons in the given Diels-Alder reaction results in the same product.
