The Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory focuses on the interaction between the HOMO and LUMO of the reactants. A reaction is allowed if the HOMO and LUMO have significant interaction in the transition state and is forbidden if they do not. The frontier orbitals involved in a Diels–Alder reaction have the appropriate symmetries to interact, so the reaction is allowed.
