The stomach mucosa has many types of cells with different functions including the production of acid, mucus as well as digestive enzymes. The structure of these cells are adapted to perform their specific functions. There are also epithelial stem cells that replenish the cells that get destroyed due to the low pH and also hormone-producing cells that control acid production.
