The body exists in a dynamic state where there is a balance between anabolic and catabolic reactions. The nutrient pools are the stocks of amino acids, carbohydrates, and fats, which are interconvertible due to certain common metabolic intermediates, such as acetyl coenzyme A and alpha-keto acids.
