Chapter 22.1, Problem 22.9QAP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) is a high energy compound that releases 14.8 kCal/mole of energy, when it hydrolyses to pyruvate and Pi. This equation can be coupled with the synthesis of ATP from ADP to Pi.

a. Write an equation for the energy –releasing reaction of PEP.

b. Write an equation for the energy-releasing reaction that forms ATP.

c. Write the overall equation for the combined reaction including the net energy change.

Concept introduction:

The phosphate ester bond in the phosphoenolpyruvate undergoes hydrolysis to form the ‘enol’ form of pyruvate. As it is unstable, it tautomerizes to a more stable ‘keto’ form. The reactant namely phosphoenolpyruvate which is ‘enol’ is unstable but the product formed converts to a stabilized form. This is the greatest contributing factor to the high standard free energy of hydrolysis of PEP.

Blurred answer
Students have asked these similar questions
Which carbocation is more stable?
Are the products of the given reaction correct?  Why or why not?
The question below asks why the products shown are NOT the correct products.  I asked this already, and the person explained why those are the correct products, as opposed to what we would think should be the correct products.  That's the opposite of what the question was asking.  Why are they not the correct products? A reaction mechanism for how we arrive at the correct products is requested ("using key intermediates").  In other words, why is HCl added to the terminal alkene rather than the internal alkene?
