Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The overall charges on each complex are to be determined.
Concept introduction:
Coordination compounds are the compounds formed by the reaction of metallic ions with polar molecules, or with a group of anions. They contain coordinate covalent bonds.
Oxidation state is also called the oxidation number. It is used to describe the oxidation, that is, theloss of electrons, in any compound.
Overall charge can be calculated by adding the total charge on the complex.
The oxidation state on Cobalt is +3 for each of the species.
Chloride ion has a charge of
Cyanide ion has a negative charge
Bromide ion has a charge of
Ethylenediamineis a neutral ligand, so its charge is zero.
