Summary Introduction

Eukaryotic cells consist of several organelles, including Golgi complex, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, flagella and cilia, chloroplast, microfilaments and microtubules, and lysosomes. The key reaction happening in the mitochondrion is cellular respiration and the key product formed is ATP. The key reaction happening in chloroplast (chlorophyll-containing organelle) is photosynthesis and the key product formed is glucose (organic compound). By photosynthesis, this organelle also results in the production of oxygen. Eukaryotic microorganisms with hydrogenosomes perform an obligate fermentative metabolism. The major reaction occurring is pyruvate oxidation, which results in the production of H2, acetate, and carbon dioxide (CO2).
