Concept explainers
To choose the correct option that identify the process in which the sodium chloride in the figure undergoing.
Answer to Problem 40R
Correct option is A.
Sodium chloride undergoing a process called dissociation.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A crystal of sodium chloride which consists of positvely charged sodium ions and negatively charged chlorine ions.
When the sodium chloride crystal placed in a polar solvent like water (in this case),the water molecules break apart the crystalline structure. The positive part of water molecules pulls the negative chlorine ions and the negative parts of water molecules pulls the postive sodium ions and surrounding them in the solution. Hence, the sodium and chlorine ions have dissociated.
Conclusion:
Thus, option A is correct.
