Chapter 20, Problem 59P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures of two five-membered-ring lactones are to be drawn.

Concept Introduction:

The aldaric acid of D-glucose forms two five membered-ring lactones.

Aldaric acid, also known as saccharic acid is a poly hydroxy dicarboxylic acid that is formally produced by the oxidation of aldose at both terminals.  Aldaric acids are synthesized by the process of oxidation of aldose with nitric acid. These are also called sugar acids.

In these acids terminal hydroxyl and carbonyl groups of the sugars have been replaced by terminal carboxylic acids and are characterized by the formula COOH(CHOH)nCOOH.  Here, n is the number of carbon units present in the chain other than terminal carbons.

Lactones are cyclic compounds. These are formed by intramolecular esterification of the corresponding Saccharide units.
