A cheetah spots a Thomson’s gazelle, its preferred prey, and leaps into action, quickly accelerating to its top speed of 30 m/s, the highest of any land animal. However, a cheetah can maintain this extreme speed for only 15 s before having to let up. The cheetah is 170 m from the gazelle as it reaches top speed, and the gazelle sees the cheetah at just this instant. With negligible react ion time, the gazelle heads directly away from the cheetah, accelerating at 4.6 m/s2 for 5.0 s, then running at constant speed. Does the gazelle escape? If so, by what distance is the gazelle in from when the cheetah gives up?

- A drowsy cat is looking at a window from across the room, and sees a flowerpot that sail first up and then down past the window. The pot is in view for a total of 0.54 s, and the top-to-bottom height of the window is 1.86 m. How high above the window top does the flowerpot go?arrow_forwardDaniel takes his two dogs, Pauli the Pointer and Newton the Newfoundland, out to a field and lets them loose to exercise. Both dogs sprint away in different directions while Daniel stands still. From Daniel's point of view, Newton runs due North at 3.90m/s, but from Pauli's point of view, Newton appears to be moving at 1.50 m/s due East. What must Pauli's velocity relative to Daniel be for this to be true? Express your answer in terms of the ? and ?‑components if North is the +? direction and East is the +? direction. a) ?-component (m/s): ?-component (m/s): b) Express your answer as a magnitude and an angle measured counter‑clockwise from due East.arrow_forwardPelicans tuck their wings and free-fall straight down when diving for fish. Suppose a pelican starts its dive from a height of 14.0 m and cannot change its path once committed. If it takes a fish 0.20 s to perform evasive action,at what minimum height must it spot the pelican to escape?Assume the fish is at the surface of the water.arrow_forward
- A red train traveling at 20 m/s and a green train traveling at 40 m/s are headed toward one another along a straight, level track. When they are 950 m apart, each engineer sees the other's train and applies the breaks. The breaks decelerates each train at the rate of 1 m/s˄2. What is the speed (in m/s) of the green train at impact?arrow_forwardA student is walking with a constant speed of ??1meters per second along High Street and sees a puddle ??1 meters ahead of her. A bus driver is driving parallel to the student along High Street as well. At the moment the bus is ??2meters behind the student, the bus driver decides he wants to splash he student with water by driving over the puddle as the student walks past. Determine the expression for the speed that the bus must have in terms of the given variables such that the bus and the student reach the puddle at the same time to splash the student.arrow_forwardA toy cannon is in a large room with ceiling at a height 6 m. The cannon fires a ball at a speed of 26 m/s. What is the maximum range of the ball if it must not hit the ceiling during its flight.arrow_forward
- A drowsy cat spots a flowerpot that sails first up and then down past an open window. The pot is in view for a total of 0.50 s, and the top-to-bottom height of the window is 2.00 m. How high above the window top does the flowerpot go?arrow_forwardA toy rocket moving vertically upward passes by a 1.8 m-high window whose sill is 7.0 mm above the ground. The rocket takes 0.16 ss to travel the 1.8 mm height of the window. a) What was the launch speed of the rocket? Assume the propellant is burned very quickly at blastoff. b) How high will the rocket go?arrow_forward3. A building is 46.0 m tall. A jealous boyfriend wishes to drop a tomato from the top of the building onto the head of his girlfriend’s suitor, who is 1.80 m and walking alongside the building at a constant speed of 1.20 m/s. How many meters should the suitor be from the position below the tomato when it is dropped? With complete solutionarrow_forward
- I'm not sure how to solve this! I tried and got 1.3 / 2.4 seconds. Am i right? Could you explain how to do it if i'm not? Cheers ! In a classic Seinfeld episode, Jerry tosses a loaf of bread (a marble rye) straight upward to his friend George who is leaning out of a third-story window. If the loaf of bread leaves Jerry's hand at a height of 1 m with an initial velocity of 18 m/sec, write an equation for the vertical position of the bread s (in meters) t seconds after release. How long will it take the bread to reach George if he catches the bread on the way up at a height of 16 m? Round to the nearest tenth of a second.arrow_forwardKevin flies (in his private jet) from Los Angeles (LA) to San Francisco (SF), a distance of 450 miles, in 3 hours. He flies back in 2-7/19 hours. If the wind is blowing from the north at a steady rate during both flights, find the velocity of the wind.Answer=20mpharrow_forwardHenrietta is going off to her physics class, jogging down the sidewalk at a speed of 4.10 m/s. Her husband Bruce suddenly realizes that she left in such a hurry that she forgot her lunch of bagels, so he runs to the window of their apartment, which is a height 43.4 m above the street level and directly above the sidewalk, to throw them to her. Bruce throws them horizontally at a time 5.00 s after Henrietta has passed below the window, and she catches them on the run. You can ignore air resistance Part A With what initial speed must Bruce throw the bagels so Henrietta can catch them just before they hit the ground?
