Chapter 2, Problem 22P
|| DATA A test driver at Incredible Motors, Inc., is testing a new model car having a speedometer calibrated to read m/s rather than mi/h. The following series of speedometer readings was obtained during a test run:
- (a) Compute the average acceleration during each 2 s interval. Is the acceleration constant? Is it constant during any part of the test run?
- (b) Make a velocity–time graph of the data shown, using scales of 1 cm = 1 s horizontally and 1 cm = 2 m/s vertically. Draw a smooth curve through the plotted points. By measuring the slope of your curve, find the magnitude of the instantaneous acceleration at times t = 9 s, 13 s, and 15 s.

Sketch a graph of acceleration versus time corresponding to the graph of velocity versus time given in the following figure. (a) Identify the time or times (ta, tb, tc, etc.) at which the acceleration has the greatest positive value. (b) At which times is it zero? (c) At which times is it negative?
S roller coaster rapidly picks up speed as it roles down a slope. As it startx down the slope the speed is 4 m/s. But 3 seconds later, at the bottom of the slope its speed is 22 m/s. What is the average acceleration.
In 1967, New Zealander Burt Munro set the world record for an Indian motorcycle, on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, with a maximum speed of 183.58 mi/h. The one‐way course was 5.00 mi long. Acceleration rates are often described by the time it takes to reach 60.0 mi/h from rest. If this time was 4.00 s, and Burt accelerated at this rate until he reached his maximum speed,
a. how long did it take Burt to complete the course?
b. Sketch position vs time, velocity vs. time, and acceleration vs. time graphs for the race.
