Chapter 19.4, Problem 19.120P
One of the tail rotor blades of a helicopter has an unbalanced weight of 1 lb at a distance of e = 6 in. from the axis of rotation. The fuselage can be considered to be fixed, and the tail rotor and tail can be modeled as an equivalent stiffness of 8800 lb/ft and an equivalent weight of 165 lb. Knowing that the blades rotate at 500 rpm, determine the forced response of the tail section.

Question 2
A reciprocating engine is installed on the fifth floor of a new building to provide ventilation services,
which can be modelled as a rigid rectangular plate resting on four elastic columns. The total mass of
the engine and floor is 1000 kg.
At the rated speed of the engine, which is 750 rev/min, the engineers experienced large vibrations of
the floor. It has been decided to reduce these vibrations by suspending a spring-mass system at the
bottom surface of the floor as the absorber.
(a) If the stiffness of the absorber is 980 kN/m, find the mass of the dynamic absorber to be
attached to the floor.
(b) Find the values of the absorber mass and absorber stiffness in order to have the natural
frequencies of the combined system at least 25% away from the forcing frequency. Verify your
answer with a calculation.
An 8-kg uniform disk of radius 200 mm is welded to a vertical shaft with a fixed end at B. The disk rotates through an angle of 3° when a static couple of magnitude 50N.m is applied to it. If the disk is acted upon by a periodic torsional couple of magnitude Tm=60N.m. determine the range of values of vf for which the amplitude of the vibration is less than the angle of rotation caused by a static couple of magnitude Tm.
Two uniform rods, each of weight W = 1.2 lb and length l = 8 in., are welded together to form the assembly shown. Knowing that the constant of each spring is k = 0.6 lb/in. and that end A is given a small displacement and released, determine the frequency of the resulting motion.
