Chapter 19, Problem 34RA
Summary Introduction

To review:

The processes involved in the physiological regulation of blood glucose during exercise.

Introduction:

Glucose is the smallest unit of carbohydrate known as monosaccharide. It is the main source for energy production through cellular respiration. The blood glucose concentration is maintained by the insulin and the glucagon hormone secreted by the pancreatic cells. Insulin reduces while glucagon raises the blood glucose level.

I played field hockey for 1 hour and my Fitbit Watch says that I expended 1,085 Calories.  If triglycerides in my adipose (fat) cells powered all that activity, how may grams of fat were consumed in powering that exercise?  (Hint:  the Calorie Content of Fats you determined in Lab Exercise 9A was 8.9 Calories/g):  Show your calculation…
Which of the following is the correct summary of the anaerobic breakdown of glucose in the skeletal muscle?   Glucose + ADP + Pi ⟶ lactate + ATP   Glucose + 2ADP + 2Pi ⟶ 2 lactate + 2ATP   Glucose + 2ADP + 2Pi + 2NAD+ ⟶ 2 pyruvate + 2ATP + 2NADH + 2H+   Glucose + ADP + Pi ⟶ pyruvate + ATP   Glucose + 2ADP + 2Pi ⟶ 2 pyruvate + 2ATP
Endurance athletes sometimes follow the exercise-and-diet plan described here: 7 days before an event, do exhaustive exercises so as to all but deplete glycogen stores. For the next 2 to 3 days, consume few carbohydrates and do moderate- to low- intensity exercises. Finally, 3 to 4 days before the event, consume a diet rich in carbohydrates. Explain the benefits of this regime.
