Chapter 18, Problem 8CGP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The chemical structure, medical use, toxicity and side effects for a drug in each of the 4 categories have to be written.

Concept introduction:

  • The four major categories of drugs are: diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
  • Diuretics lower blood volume by causing the kidney to excrete more water. For example, hydrochlorothiazide.
  • Beta blockers reduce the force of the heartbeat, slowing the heart rate. For example, propranolol.
  • Calcium channel blockers are vasodilators. For example, diltiazem.
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibits the action of the enzyme that causes blood vessels to contract. For example, lisinopril.
