Concept Introduction:

Aldehydes and ketones are reduced most readily by hydride reagents such as LiAlH4 or NaBH4 to form primary and secondary alcohols.

The steric effect results from the larger size of atoms or groups. This effect has occurs from the fact that atoms that made molecules occupy some space and when these atoms come too close together then the energy of the molecule increases due to the atoms that are forced to occupy same space.
