(a)
Interpretation:
The oxides peroxides and super oxides of given elements should be written.
Concept Introduction:
The metallic character increase, the basic property of an oxide increase, oxides of elements in left hand side of the periodic table are basic, oxide of elements in right hand side of the periodic table are acidic.
Metallic oxides are basic in nature because they react with dilute acids to form salt and water, they also react with water to form metal hydroxides which are alkaline in nature because these metal hydroxides release hydroxyl ion in solution.
(b)
Interpretation:
The paramagnetic compounds should be identified from oxides peroxides and super oxides of given elements.
Concept introduction:
Magnetic properties of periodic elements: The electron behaves like a tiny magnet, two electrons that are opposite in spin cancel each other. Only atoms with unpaired electrons exhibit magnetic susceptibility.
Paramagnetic: Substance is one that is weakly attracted by a magnetic field, usually the result of unpaired electrons.
Diamagnetic: Substance is not attracted by a magnetic field because it has only paired electrons.
(c)
Interpretation:
The balanced equation should be written for given element (B) reaction with water.
Concept introduction:
To write the net ionic equation, steps mentioned below must be followed.
- 1. Write the balanced molecular equation
- 2. Write the ionic equation showing the strong electrolytes completely dissociated into cations and anions.
- 3. Cancel the spectator ions on both sides of the ionic equation.
- 4. Check that charges and number of atoms are balanced in the net ionic equation.
