Different high rated academic institutes stated different theories on leadership. According to the University of Iowa, there are three styles of leadership: autocratic, democratic, and laissez-fair. Initial results indicated that the democratic style of leadership is more effective as compared to the other two leadership style.

Later studies found that all the style stated by the University of Iowa had mixed results. Later, when the group satisfaction was examined, the results indicated that the democratic leadership style is more effective than the autocratic leadership style.

Another highly rated academic institute the Ohio university examined that a leader who is capable to achieve high initiating structure and consideration tends to achieve high group task performance and group satisfaction.

The University of Michigan determined the two styles of leadership: employee-oriented and production-oriented. Innovators stated that a leader who is employee-oriented was capable to achieve high group productivity and group satisfaction as compared to the production-oriented.

The managerial grid stated various leadership styles. But the managerial grid did not provide an answer to the question of what made an employee an effective leader. Managerial grid only justifies the structure for conceptualizing leadership style.
