Chapter 16.11, Problem 13P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The products formed on oxidation of each of the given compounds with periodic acid are to be predicted.

Concept Introduction:

Vicinal diols are the compounds that have a hydroxyl group attached to the adjacent carbon atoms.

Reaction of a vicinal diol with periodic acid results in the cleavage of bonds that connect the two hydroxyl groups to the adjacent carbon atoms in the diol molecule.

Depending on the number of hydrogen atoms attached to these carbon atoms, aldehydes or ketones are produced.

If the hydroxyl group is attached to a primary carbon atom, formaldehyde is produced at that carbon atom.

If the hydroxyl group is attached to a secondary carbon atom, aldehyde is produced at that carbon atom.

If the hydroxyl group is attached to a tertiary carbon atom, a ketone is produced at that carbon atom.
