Interpretation:
The number of sigma and pi bonds contained in a single ethene molecule needs to be determined.
Concept introduction:
When the orbitals of atoms overlap in end-to-end order, sigma bonds are generated. The shared electrons in this bond is concentrated in the area present between the two atoms.
A pi-bond occur when there is a side-by-side orbital overlap and in this bond, the shared electrons are present above and below the plane of the bonding atoms.
Answer to Problem 93A
Ethene has 5 sigma bonds and 1 pi bond.
Explanation of Solution
The ethene molecule contain 4 C-H sigma bonds that is seen around the outside of the molecule. The two central C atoms are bonded by a sigma bond as well. The remaining bond between both the carbon atoms is due to the presence of the pi-bond. The p-orbitals of the Carbon atoms overlap sideways in this pi-bond.
Therefore, ethene has 5 sigma bonds and 1 pi bondas shown in figure 16.25.
From figure 16.25, it can be concluded that, ethene has 5 sigma bonds and 1 pi bond.
