Chapter 16, Problem 16P

Suppose that you are asked to design a column to support a compressive load P, as shown in Fig. P16.16a. The column has a cross-section shaped as a thin-wall edpipe as shown in Fig. P16.16b.

The design variables are the mean pipe diameter d and the wall thickness t. The cost of the pipe is computed by

C o s t = f ( t , d ) = c 1 W + c 2 d

where c 1 = 4   and  c 2 = 2 are cost factors and W = weight of the pipe,

W = π d t H ρ

where ρ = density of the pipe material= 0.0025 k g / c m 3 . The column must support the load under compressive stress and not buckle. Therefore,

Actual stress ( ρ ) maximum compressive yield stress

= σ y = 550  kg/cm 2

Actual stress buckling stress

The actual stress is given by

σ = P A = P π d t

The buckling stress can be shown to be

σ b = π E I H 2 d t

where E = modulus of elasticity and I = second moment of the area of the cross section. Calculus can be used to show that

I = π 8 d t ( d 2 + t 2 )

Finally, diameters of available pipes are between d 1 and d 2 and thicknesses between t 2 and t 2 . Develop and solve this problem by determining the values of d and t that minimize the cost. Note that H = 275  cm , P = 2000 k g , E = 90 , 000  kg / cm 2 , d 1 = 1  cm , d 2 = 10  cm , t 1 = 0.1  cm ,   and  t 2 = 1  cm .

2. Consider the ODE u' = ƒ (u) = u² + r where r is a parameter that can take the values r = −1, −0.5, -0.1, 0.1. For each value of r: (a) Sketch ƒ(u) = u² + r and determine the equilibrium points. (b) Draw the phase line. (d) Determine the stability of the equilibrium points. (d) Plot the direction field and some sample solutions,i.e., u(t) (e) Describe how location of the equilibrium points and their stability change as you increase the parameter r. (f) Using the matlab program phaseline.m generate a solution for each value of r and the initial condition u(0) = 0.9. Print and turn in your result for r = −1. Do not forget to add a figure caption. (g) In the matlab program phaseline.m set the initial condition to u(0) = 1.1 and simulate the ode over the time interval t = [0, 10] for different values of r. What happens? Why? You do not need to turn in a plot for (g), just describe what happens.
