► The carbohydrate is classified on the presence of ring in the structure.

► Monosaccharide carbohydrate: it contains only one ring in their structure.

► Disaccharide carbohydrate: it contains two rings in their structure.

► Polysaccharide carbohydrate: Polysaccharide carbohydrate contains three or more than three rings in their structure.

► A glycosidic bond is a type of covalent bond in which one molecule of joining is always sugar (carbohydrate) with β-configuration. There are following types of glycosidic bonds:

1. β-O- glycosidic bond.

2. β-N- glycosidic bond.

3. β-S- glycosidic bond.

4. β-C- glycosidic bond.

► Reducing sugars:

Those carbohydrates are known as reducing sugars which have either an aldehyde group or are able to introduce this group by isomerism in their structure. Examples:

Monosaccharides like glucose, galactose and disaccharides like lactose and maltose.
