Covalent solids are held together by shared bonds and are also known by network solids. They have localized electrons that are arranged in fixed geometries. They get distorted when sigma bonds are broken. As a result, covalent solids have high melting temperatures and are extremely hard substances. They break into pieces instead of shape change that is they are stiff and brittle.
