Chapter 14.1, Problem 14.7QAP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: What are the common names of given organic compounds?

General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry: Structures of Life (5th Edition), Chapter 14.1, Problem 14.7QAP

Concept introduction:

The given compounds are carbonyl compounds and can be given nomenclature by common names or by IUPAC names.

For common names of aldehyde we generally use the common name of carboxylic acid (corresponding) by replacing the “ic” of the acid with aldehyde. For substituent we do not use the numerals 1,2,3 etc, but we use Greek letters.

For common name of a ketone is based on the two alkyl or aryl chains attached to carbonyl carbon.
