Explanation of Solution

The half-cell reactions for the given chemical equations can be obtained by writing the oxidation numbers of each species present in the given reaction.

+21+11+311+1CoCl2s+Na2O2aqCoOH3s+Claq+Na+aq

As the compound, Na2O2 undergoes removal of oxygen atoms and CoCl2 undergoes the addition of oxygen atoms, Na2O2 acts as an oxidizing agent and CoCl2 acts as a reducing agent in the given reaction.

On the other hand, the oxidation number of oxygen atom changes from 1 to 2 and the oxidation number of cobalt atom changes from +2 to +3 . Therefore, oxygen is being reduced and cobalt is being oxidized.

On the basis of this, the oxidation (anode) and reduction half-cell reactions (cathode) can be written as,

Anode:CoCl2sCoOH3s+ClaqCathode:Na2O2aqOHaq+Na+aq

Now, balance the reaction occurring at anode by using the stepwise approach as,

CoCl2sCoOH3s+2ClaqCoCl2sCoOH3s+2Claq+e3OHaq+CoCl2sCoOH3s+2Claq+e

Now, balance the reaction occurring at cathode by using the stepwise approach as,

Na2O2aq2OHaq+2Na+aqNa2O2aq+2e2OHaq+2Na+aqNa2O2aq+2e2OHaq+2Na+aq+2OHaqNa2O2aq+2H2Ol+2e4OHaq+2Na+aq

Multiply the reaction occurring at anode with 2 and add it with the cathode-half reaction in order to obtain the overall reaction.

23OHaq+CoCl2sCoOH3s+2Claq+e6OHaq+2CoCl2s2CoOH3s+4Claq+2eNa2O2aq+2H2Ol+2e4OHaq+2Na+aq6OHaq+2CoCl2s+2H2Ol+Na2O2aq2CoOH3s+4Claq+4OHaq+2Na+aq¯¯

The overall reaction can be obtained by balancing the hydroxide ions in the final equation as,

2OHaq+2H2Ol+2CoCl2s+Na2O2aq2CoOH3s+4Claq+2Na+aq

Explanation of Solution

The half-cell reactions for the given chemical equations can be obtained by writing the oxidation numbers of each species present in the given reaction.

+32+11+521Bi2O3s+ClOaqBiO3aq+Claq

As the compound ClO undergoes removal of oxygen atoms and Bi2O3 involves the gain of electrons, ClO acts as an oxidizing agent and Bi2O3 acts as reducing agent in the given reaction. On the other hand, the oxidation number of chlorine atom changes from +1 to 1 and the oxidation number of bismuth atom changes from +3 to +5 , therefore, chlorine is being reduced and bismuth is being oxidized.

On the basis of this, the oxidation (anode) and reduction half-cell reactions (cathode) can be written as,

Anode:Bi2O3sBiO3aqCathode:ClOaqClaq

Now, balance the reaction occurring at anode by using the stepwise approach as,

Bi2O3s2BiO3aqBi2O3s2BiO3aq+4e6OHaq+Bi2O3s2BiO3aq+4e6OHaq+Bi2O3s2BiO3aq+3H2Ol+4e

Now, balance the reaction occurring at cathode by using the stepwise approach as,

ClOaq+2eClaqClOaq+2e2OHaq+ClaqClOaq+H2Ol+2e2OHaq+Claq

Multiply the reaction occurring at cathode with 2 and add it with the cathode-half reaction in order to obtain the overall reaction.

2ClOaq+H2Ol+2e2OHaq+Claq2ClOaq+2H2Ol+4e4OHaq+2Claq6OHaq+Bi2O3s2BiO3aq+3H2Ol+4e2ClOaq+2H2Ol+6OHaq+Bi2O3s4OHaq+2Claq+2BiO3aq+3H2Ol¯¯

The overall reaction can be obtained by balancing the hydroxide ions and water molecules in the final equation as,

2ClOaq+2OHaq+Bi2O3s2Claq+2BiO3aq+H2Ol
