Textbook Question
Chapter 14, Problem 3P
Additive manufacturing processes can also build shapes from various polymers and metals directly from computer files. These products could be used as patterns for the various sand casting and core-making processes.
- Briefly discuss the advantages of this approach.
- For the various additive materials and the intended use as a sand pattern, discuss features such as cost, wear resistance and mold life, and other consideration factors.
- Wax or selected polymers could be used to produce the expendable patterns for investment casting. How might this expand the use of the investment casting process?

What are "no-bake" molds, and how do they compare to green sand molds?
a) "No Bake" molds replace the tradition clay-and-water or thermoset polymer
binders used in traditional sand molds with resins that do not need heat in
order to cure. The result is a mold that can maintain better dimensional
control over high production volume.
b) "No Bake" molds replace the tradition clay-and-water or thermoset polymer
binders used in traditional sand molds with fine wood chips. They are then
compressed with high pressure without baking.
c) "No Bake" molds replace the tradition clay-and-water or thermoset polymer
binders used in traditional sand molds with dry clay that do not need heat in
order to cure. The result is a mold that doesn't require and baking.
d) "No Bake" molds is the same as the tradition clay-and-water but used in high
production volume.
