Concept explainers
Both members of a couple know that they are carriers of the cystic fibrosis allele. None of their three children has cystic fibrosis, but any one of them might be a carrier The couple would like to have a fourth child but are worried that he or she would very likety have the disease, since the first three do not. What would you tell the couple? Would it remove some uncertainty from their prediction if they could find out whether the three children are carriers?

- A couple, who are both normal, have a daughter who is albino and a son who is normal. a) what is the probability that their normal son is a carrier of the albinism gene? Show your work. b) the couple wants to have 3 more children; what is the probability that they will have 3 normal girls? Show your work.arrow_forwardMary and Ron don't have albinism. However, is it possible for them to have a child with albinism? Explain. Stephanie has normal color vision. Her husband Chris also has normal color vision. They have a son that is color blind and a daughter that has normal color vision. What is the genotype of the mother, father, son and the daughter? Andy and Anne do not have polydactyl. Is it possible for them to have a child with polydactyl? Explain. When examining a pedigree chart, I notice that only males are affected. What does this tell me about the inheritance pattern? A man with blood type A marries a woman with blood type B. Their child has blood type O. What are the genotypes of the parents?arrow_forwardFrank and Susan both have freckles but they're firstborn son Lawrence does not demonstrate the characteristics. What are the most likely genotype of Frank Susan and Lawrence?arrow_forward
- YOUR SISTER DIED FROM TAY-SACHS DISEASE, INHERITED AS A RECESSIVE ALLELE (t). you're married and planning to start your family. you're worried about the disease and decide to have genetic testing to see if you or your spouse is a carrier of the tay-sachs allele. the test results show that you're a carrier of the allele, but your spouse isn't. what is the probability that you and your spouse will have a child with tay-sachs disease? show your work.arrow_forwardAt her first prenatal visit, a woman relates that her maternal aunt has cystic fibrosis, an autosomal recessive illness. Which of the following statements is appropriate for the nurse to make? a. It is unnecessary for you to worry since our aunt is not a direct relation." b. "We can check to see whether or not you are a carrier for cystic fibrosis." c. "You should have an amniocentesis to see whether or not your child has the disease." d. Please ask your mother whether she has ever had any symptoms of cystic fibrosisarrow_forwardLuisa is a carrier of the allele for Tay-Sachs but has no sign of any eye disorder in her family. Shemarried Gerard whose mother was afflicted with retinitis pigmentosa, unlike his father. Neither of hisparents has any history of Tay-Sachs disease. 1. What are the genotypes of Luisa and Gerard? 2. If they plan to have five children, what is the probability that: a. all their children will be normal?b. they will have a daughter with retinitis pigmentosa? c. they will have a son inflicted with both conditions? d. at least 2 will be normal? - A woman homozygous for normal height, with freckles, almond-shaped eyes, small nose, and Type A blood, has a Type O mother with no freckles and a type AB father with round eyes. She is engaged to a man with achondroplasia, round eyes and medium sized nose. Unlike his father, hismother is of normal height. Both his parents have Type O blood but nobody from both sides of his family has or had freckles. a. Write the COMPLETE genotypes of the man and the woman. Clearly indicate which genotype belongs to whom. b. Based on their genotypes, what is the probability that they will have: b.1 a child with Achondroplasia? b.2 a child of normal height? b.3 a child with type AB blood? b.4 a daughter with round eyes, freckles, and medium sized nose? b.5 a son with almond eyes, no freckles, and small nose?b.6 a daughter with same genotype as the woman? b.7 a son with same genotype as the man?arrow_forwardDuchenne muscular dystrophy is sex linked and usually affects only males. Victims of the disease become progressively weaker, starting early in life.a. What is the probability that a woman whose brother has Duchenne’s disease will have an affected child?b. If your mother’s brother (your uncle) had Duchenne’s disease, what is the probability that you have received the allele?c. If your father’s brother had the disease, what is the probability that you have received the allele?arrow_forwardClara has polydactyly, an autosomal dominant that is 80% penetrant. Clara inherited her polydactyly from her mother, her father had no polydactyly in his family. She has an extra toe on her left foot. Her husband Ralph has no polydactyly in his family. A) What is the chance that Clara will have a child that will inherit polydactyly? B) What is the chance that the child will express polydactyly. You can leave these as un-calculated equations.arrow_forward
- A man with hemophilia (a recessive, sex-linkedcondition) has a daughter without the condition. She marries a man who does not have hemophilia. What is the probability that their daughter willhave hemophilia? Their son? If they have foursons, what is the probability that all will be affected?arrow_forwardSickle cell anemia is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition. It also exhibits incomplete dominance in that the heterozygous genotype displays a mild form of the disease known as sickle cell trait while individuals with the homozygous recessive genotype have a severe form of SCA. A man who has severe sickle cell anemia marries a woman who suffers from a mild trait. What is the probabilitu they will have a child with severe SCA?What is the probability they will have a child with mild SCA? What is the probability they will have a normal child? Show ALL work using punnett squares.arrow_forwardSheree is referred to a genetic counselor because a cystic fibrosis (CF) test done as a routine part of her prenatal care indicated that she is a carrier of the most common mutant allele. Sheree is stunned, because no one in her family has the disease. She is 26 years old. The genetic counselor would most likely explain autosomal recessive inheritance and suggest that Sheree's husband be tested for the CF allele. explain autosomal dominant inheritance and suggest that Sheree's husband be tested for the CF allele. explain autosomal recessive inheritance and suggest that Sheree's parents be tested for the CF allele. advise Sheree to have amniocentesis to check the fetus for the CF genotype.arrow_forward
