Question
Chapter 13.2, Problem 1LO
Summary Introduction
To explain: The relationship between sex chromosomes and sex determination.
Introduction: All eukaryotic organisms contain chromosomes, and the number of chromosomes varies in different organisms. By studying the fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster, T. H. Morgan correlated sex chromosomes with the inheritance of a trait. During meiosis, a female Drosophila generates only X-bearing gametes, however, a male fly generates both Y-bearing and X-bearing gametes. A female fly (XX zygote) develops when an X sperm is involved in the fertilization and a male fly (XY zygote) develops when a Y sperm is involved in the fertilization.

Relate the characteristics of the Y chromosome
During meiosis in male mammals, sex chromosomes segregate to produce two types of sperm: X‑bearing sperm and Y‑bearing sperm.
True or false?
Explain why nondisjunction of sex chromosomes is more well-tolerated thannondisjunction in autosomes, even though genetic nondisjunction of sex chromosomes usually results in sterility and abnormalities of sex organs.
