Introduction:

The thermal expansion is the material property.

As the steam passes through the pipes there will be a change in the length and the volume. These changes can affect the experiment and give an incorrect value. So, to cancel these effects

the steam pipes are made of U section so that the expansion in the length will be cancelled by the expansion in the volume due to U shape.

Conclusion:

To cancel the effect of thermal expansion the long steam pipe is made of U section.
