To define : Differences between an algebraic expression and a verbal expression
Answer to Problem 39PPE
The difference is that an algebraic expression, consist of numbers, variables and mathematical symbols whereas a verbal expression, consist of only words.
Explanation of Solution
Algebraic expression:
An algebraic expression in defined as a mathematical expression or terms made up of numbers and variables with algebraic operations (addition ‘+’, subtraction ‘-’, multiplication ‘*’ etc.)
For example:
In this expression, operators are used.
Verbal Expression:
When an algebraic expression is defined as an expression which consists of words, then it is called as a verbal expression.
For example: The difference of 5 and r
In this example, above algebraic expression is defined in words (difference of 5 and r).
Thus, it is called as a verbal expression not an algebraic expression.
