Chapter 13, Problem 20CYU
Summary Introduction
To review:
Based on the given phrases determine whether it applies to a macula or a crista ampullaris: inside a semicircular canal; contains otoliths; responds to linear acceleration and deceleration; has a cupula; responds to rotational acceleration and deceleration; inside a saccule.
Introduction:
The ear is the organ of hearing. The ear is divided into three major areas: external ear, middle ear, and internal ear. The external and middle ear structures involved with hearing function while internal ear functions in both equilibrium and hearing and have complex organization. Internal ear is also called labyrinth.

Head movements are detected primarily in the semicircular canals and gravity by the otolith organs. T or F?
Ototoxic drugs are drugs that may damage the cochlea, auditory nerve and/or the vestibular system of the ear. The damage caused is usually temporary and symptoms improve once the patient stops taking the drug. However, in some patients, the damage is permanent. Damage to the cochlea is the most common problem associated with these drugs.
The reason that hearing loss results when the cochlea is damaged is:
Select one:
a. The bones in the ear do not amplify or increase the sound vibrations.
b. The eardrum cannot transmit vibrations from sound waves to the malleus.
c. The Eustachian tube remains open.
d. Hair cells within the damaged cochlea do not bend preventing the transmission of an electrical signal to the auditory nerve.
