EBK CHEMISTRY FOR CHANGING TIMES, Chapter 12, Problem 24P

Interpretation:

A balanced chemical equation must be provided depicting the dissolution of galena in hydrochloric acid

Concept Introduction:

  • Chemical reactions in which both reduction and oxidation reactions take place are called redox reactions. These involve changes in the oxidation state of the reactants.
  • Reduction reactions proceed via gain of electrons and a decrease in the oxidation number. In contrast, oxidation reactions proceed via loss of electrons and an increase in the oxidation number.
  • An oxidizing agent is an electron acceptor, i.e. it gains electrons and undergoes reduction. A reducing agent is an electron donor, i.e. it loses electrons and gets oxidized.
