Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Of the following properties the one that indicates very strong intermolecular forces in a liquid has to be identified.
- (a) Very low surface tension
- (b) Very low critical temperature
- (c) Very low boiling point
- (d) Very low vapor pressure
Concept Introduction:
Intermolecular force
The force of attraction between the molecules of a substance that holds the molecules together is known as Intermolecular force.
Surface tension
Surface tension is defined as the attractive forces between the liquid molecules in the bulk of the liquid and those molecules in the surface of the liquid.
Critical temperature
The temperature at which and above a gaseous substance cannot be liquefied irrespective of the pressure.
Boiling point
The temperature at which vapor pressure of the liquid becomes equal to atmospheric pressure is boiling point of the liquid.
Vapor pressure
When a liquid substance evaporates, the pressure exerted by molecules in vapor phase is termed as vapor pressure.
Of the given properties, the one that indicates very strong intermolecular force is option (d) very low vapor pressure.
