Chapter 12, Problem 12.120SP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The metal with greater density among calcium and strontium in FCC unit cells has to be found.
Concept Introduction:
FCC:
In the face-centred cubic (FCC) cell, there will be six faces in a cube and the centre of each face has a lattice point. Apart from the six faces, there will be eight corners. One corner atom is shared by 8 unit cells and a face-centred atom is shared by 2 unit cells.
The formula of density is:
From the formula of density, it is clear that the density is directly proportional to the mass. So, if the mass of a metal in FCC is greater, then its density will also be greater and vice versa.
