Interpretation:

Of the following two transitions the one that gives off more heat has to be identified –

1. (a) One mole of steam to one mole of water at
2. (b) One mole of water to one mole of ice at

Concept Introduction:

• Phase change

A phase change means the change in the physical state of substance – from one physical state to another physical state.  The possible phase changes occur among vapor, solid and liquid phases of a substance are – melting, freezing, evaporation (or vaporization), condensation, deposition and sublimation.

• Heat of Vaporization

Heat of vaporization, also known as Latent heat of Vaporization refers to the quantity of heat required to vaporize liquid to vapour  and vice versa.

• Heat of Fusion

Heat of fusion, also known as Latent heat of fusion refers to the amount of energy required to melt a solid to liquid  and vice versa.
