Chapter 11.3, Problem 56E

Women diagnosed with breast cancer whose tumors have not spread may be faced with a decision between two surgical treatments—mastectomy (removal of the breast) or lumpectomy (only the tumor is removed). In a long-term study of the effectiveness of these two treatments, 701 women with breast cancer were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. One group received mastectomies and the other group received lumpectomies and radiation. Both groups were followed for 20 years after surgery. It was reported that there was no statistically significant difference in the proportion surviving for 20 years for the two treatments (Associated Press, October 17, 2002).

What hypotheses do you think the researchers tested in order to reach the given conclusion?

A tamoxifen study claims that a combination of chemotherapy and the hormone therapy tamoxifen is more effective than tamoxifen alone in preventing breast cancer. In the study, a group of researchers from the U.S. and Canada studied 1477 postmenopausal women with early-stage breast cancer. The women were randomly assigned to one of three study groups. The first group of 361 received tamoxifen alone on a daily basis for five years. The second group of 566 received chemotherapy and tamoxifen for six months, and then completed five years of tamoxifen treatment. And the third group of 550 received chemotherapy alone for six months followed by five years of tamoxifen treatment. All 1477 patients knew which treatment they were receiving. In this study, which is the control group? the 1477 postmenopausal women the second group of 566 that received tamoxifen and chemotherapy concurrently for 6 months the first group of 361 that received tamoxifen alone the third group of 550 that received…
Study 2: Two hundred people were randomly selected from a list of all people living in Minneapolis who receive Social Security. Each person in the sample was asked whether or not they took calcium supplements. These people were followed for 5 years, and whether or not they had a heart attack during the 5-year period was noted. The researchers found that the proportion of heart attack victims in the group taking calcium supplements was significantly higher than the proportion of heart attack victims in the group not taking calcium supplements. A)  observational study or an experiment B) Did the study use random selection from some population? (Yes or No) C) Did the study use random assignment to the experimental groups? (Yes or No) D) Based on the description of the study, is it reasonable to conclude that taking calcium supplements if the cause of the increased risk of a heart attack? (Yes or No)
Individuals who have experienced a stroke are at an increased risk of having another stroke. Prevention is particularly important for high-risk populations. The Second European Stroke Prevention Study asked whether daily doses of an anti-blood- clotting agent, such as aspirin or dipyridamole, would help prevent strokes among patients who had just experienced a first stroke. Volunteer patients were randomly assigned to one of four treatment options: placebo, aspirin, Dipy., Both drugs. Researchers then recorded the patients who had another stroke and specifically if they died from that second stroke or not. What are the hypotheses to determine if there is there a relationship between treatment and death from second stroke? Ho: Treatment type and death from second stroke are independent from one another. Ha: Treatment type and death from second stroke are NOT independent from one another. Ho: Treatment type and death from second stroke are NOT independent from one another. Ha: Treatment…
