Chapter 11, Problem 54P
A uniform, solid, spherical asteroid with mass 1.2 × 1013 kg and radius 1.0 km is rotating with period 4.3 h. A meteoroid moving in the asteroid’s equatorial plane crashes into the equator at 8.4 km/s. It hits at a 58° angle to the vertical and embeds itself at the surface. After the impact the asteroid’s rotation period is 3.9 h. Find the meteoroid’s mass.

Suppose that the Sun runs out of nuclear fuel and suddenly collapses to form a white dwarf
star. The size shrinks and became as big as earth. Assuming that there is no loss in mass and it
maintained to be a solid sphere, what would be the little white dwarf star's rotation
period. The present rotation of the sun is about 25 days.
Earth's radius = 6.37x10^6
Sun's radius = 6.96x10^8
A large spherical gas cloud of radius = 5 x109 km has a mass = 2.4 x1030 kg, and is spinning to make one revolution in 60 years (i.e. Earth years, each of 365 days of 24 hours each). Due to gravity, the cloud gets smaller to a radius = 1.2 x106 km. What will be its period of rotation in minutes?
A moon of Saturn takes 0.94 days to orbit at a distance of 1.9 ✕ 105 km from the center of the planet. What is the total mass (in kg) of Saturn plus the moon?

- Why is the following situation impossible? A space station shaped like a giant wheel has a radius of r = 100 m and a moment of inertia of 5.00 108 kg m2. A crew of 150 people of average mass 65.0 kg is living on the rim, and the stations rotation causes the crew to experience an apparent free-fall acceleration of g (Fig. P10.52). A research technician is assigned to perform an experiment in which a ball is dropped at the rim of the station every 15 minutes and the time interval for the ball to drop a given distance is measured as a test to make sure the apparent value of g is correctly maintained. One evening, 100 average people move to the center of the station for a union meeting. The research technician, who has already been performing his experiment for an hour before the meeting, is disappointed that he cannot attend the meeting, and his mood sours even further by his boring experiment in which every time interval for the dropped ball is identical for the entire evening.arrow_forwardA disk 8.00 cm in radius rotates at a constant rate of 1200 rev/min about its central axis.
